First 2012 Olympic success by Charlotte

The recently finished Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour in Dorset will be the venue for the sailing competitions in the Olympics. It is the first London 2012 Olympic Games venue to be finished.

Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy

Text Box:

The site is a combination of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing academy and the adjoining commercial marina. It has kick-started the regeneration of the former Naval Air Station at Portland, which is now known as Osprey Quay. The new residential, marina and commercial facilities have also recently been finished. It is located in an exposed area to the western end of the English Channel and provides some of the best natural sailing waters in the UK.
The National Sailing Academy will benefit from the improved facilities that the 2012 Games will leave behind as well as improvement to the local infrastructure such as the new road link to Dorchester.

The venue has been completed on budget and ahead of schedule. It provides a new, permanent 250m slipway and new lifting and mooring facilities as well as world-class facilities for elite athletes as well as the local community. The facilities have been finished more than three years before the Olympics start.
