New Teachers

Following appointment to the school the induction of new colleagues begins.

Initially, information is provided in order that the new colleague can become familiar with certain policies and procedures prior to starting at the school.

Each new colleague is allocated a Subject Mentor and a Buddy on arrival at the school.

Subject Mentor

The role of the Subject Mentor is to induct the new colleague into School and Departmental policies and practice, Schemes of Work, priorities and so on.  This will usually be a Line Manager within the school.

Subject colleagues will be available on a daily basis to provide opportunities for explanation and discussion but the Subject Mentor will ensure that, on a regular basis, time is set aside to formally address induction needs.  Good practice dictates that the new colleague will reflect on induction needs and discuss a plan to meet these needs with the Mentor.

Buddy

The Buddy  is a colleague from another subject area who provides informal support on a range of everyday issues - events, arrangements for lunch, etc and is available to talk through any issue which may arise.  This is a less formal arrangement but nevertheless is an important one and one which needs time to be allocated.
