We
regularly run a course for Aspiring Middle
Managers. The aim of the training programme is to enable aspiring
managers to understand, develop and use a range of leadership and
management skills. It is hoped that the course will help participants
to develop self awareness and confidence in implementing these skills
and will also provide them with a structured supported opportunity to
implement them in a practical way to impact on teaching and learning.
The
format of the course has been four taught session (January, February, March
and April) and participants also engage in their own independent
research and reading around generic leadership and management skills.
In addition, each participant undertakes a management project which is
discussed with a senior manager and then supported by a middle manager
acting as Mentor. Generic leadership and management skills are covered
and therefore colleagues are able to undertake a project within either
pastoral or academic areas. At the end of the course, each colleague
produces a report for senior managers to reflect on their progress,
learning and impact of their work on students.

The four taught sessions centred on:
Middle Management Training
As new middle managers have joined us we have, from time to time, delivered additional training opportunities to support induction of the individual and development of the middle management team.
Sessions have included:-
§
The
nature of middle management and leadership, exploring the challenges and
opportunities and important skills, knowledge and understanding
required.
§
Developing and sharing a vision. An opportunity to reflect on our
vision for individual areas and to look at ways in which this can be
shared and reinforced to the wider team.
§
Quality Assurance – an opportunity to reflect on the role of the subject
leader in quality assurance with the team and to consider a range of
strategies available in planning and carrying out a quality assurance
role.
